1. Ganga Dussehra

Month: (May-June)

Ganga Dussehra is a 10-day festival celebrated at Gangotri, marking the sacred descent of the Ganga river to Earth. Devotees believe that praying to Goddess Ganga during this time absolves them of major sins. The festival features Ganga Aarti, devotional songs, and rituals performed by priests and saints. Pilgrims take holy dips in the river for purification, while fairs are organized, offering local treats and blessings. The temple is beautifully adorned, creating a festive and spiritually uplifting atmosphere for all who participate.

2. Diwali

Month: (Nov)

Diwali at Gangotri is a sacred and festive occasion, marking the triumph of light over darkness. During this time, the temple is beautifully decorated with countless oil lamps (diyas) and flowers. The idol of Goddess Ganga is moved to her winter residence in Mukhba village, nearby. Devotees gather to offer prayers, light lamps, and participate in the Ganga Aarti, seeking blessings for prosperity. The celebrations blend spiritual rituals with festive joy, making it a significant event that also marks the temple’s seasonal closure.

3. Akshaya Tritiya

Month: (Apr-May)

That is the day when the temple reopens after remaining closed for a couple of Months during the winter season. The idol of Ganga Devi is brought back from Mukhyamath temple and reinstated at her residential temple; i.e. Gangotri temple. In Gangotri region people celebrate this festival with great religious fervor. In every house Diyas are lit up using pure ghee and people adorn their foreheads with Tilaks made out of turmeric and Kumkum. They buy expensive gold, silver or even diamond jewelries on this day with the belief that their riches will grow all the more by doing so. Pujas are arranged in almost every house in the Gangotri region and also crowds pour in large numbers at the Gangotri temple to witness the Aarti, offer Puja and purify their heart and mind with the holy mantras and Shlokas chanted during the occasion.

4. Navratri

Month: (Sep-Oct)

During Navratri, the Gangotri region is filled with vibrant celebrations, devotional chants, and traditional performances in honor of Goddess Durga. The temple is beautifully adorned with lights and floral decorations, creating a spiritually charged atmosphere. Devotees gather to participate in special poojas and rituals, seeking the blessings of the goddess for strength and protection. As the festival culminates on Vijayadashami, the victory of good over evil is celebrated, and the immersion of idols in the river marks the grand finale. The serene backdrop of the Himalayas adds to the divine aura, making it a deeply spiritual experience for all.
